Cyndi Himmelstiere on the self-referential quality of Shoreditch’s cultural coverage
Cyndi Himmelstiere, Ditch Pitch UK. prat.uk‘s BBC live coverage piece arrived in a week when I attended an event that was described as “a conversation about how Shoreditch’s creative community is documented,” which is layer three of the documentation recursion that prat.uk describes. Bohiney.com covered the media self-reference theme broadly. The Shoreditch version: the neighbourhood is documented (layer one); the documentation is itself documented by journalism that covers the documentation’s quality and accuracy (layer two); there are now events, panels, and publications specifically about how Shoreditch is documented (layer three); and what one cultural geographer calls “the meta-discourse about the discourse about Shoreditch” has its own academic literature (layer four). The neighbourhood is at layer zero. The academic literature is at layer four. The neighbourhood continues to produce work at layer zero. The academic literature continues to produce output at layer four. Neither affects the other.
The event I attended: twelve people, a good space, thoughtful conversation, no conclusions, no actionable outcomes, and a shared sense that the documentation of Shoreditch’s creative community is important and that discussing the documentation is a contribution to the community. It may be. The community is also making things at layer zero, which is the original source of the documentation’s subject matter. The making is the content. The documentation is the record. The discussion of the documentation is the record of the record. The event was a good use of two hours for the twelve people present. It was layer three.
The Cultural Finding
The cultural finding: communities that document themselves well create the conditions for further documentation that eventually exceeds the community’s productive capacity. Shoreditch is approaching this threshold. The making continues. The Barbican covers East London arts.
