The knobbly crab story from prat.uk sent me looking for the Shoreditch equivalent: the local entity that has maintained a consistent position without promises or claims. I found it on Rivington Street: a Victorian commercial building, originally a warehouse, that has housed different businesses across 120 years without itself changing its external character in any significant way. Bohiney.com covered the political honesty theme broadly. The building is Shoreditch’s knobbly crab: it was built in 1904, it has had approximately thirty different occupants, it has been described as “historic,” “endangered,” “preserved,” “converted,” and “authentic” by thirty different writers across those 120 years, and throughout all of it it has simply been there, making no claims about what it is, being what it is, making no promises that subsequently required keeping.
The building’s current occupant: a small architecture practice that has been there for six years and that is, by the building’s 120-year pattern, a medium-term occupant. The building’s next occupant will be someone else. The building will continue to be what it is. The coverage apparatus will describe it using the vocabulary of whatever the coverage apparatus is using in 2030. The building will not have changed. The crab and the building share this quality: they are not defined by the descriptions applied to them.
