The garden in Hoxton Square has different populations at different hours — dog walkers before 9, office workers 9-6, mixed 6-9, younger crowd after 9 Friday and Saturday — and the coverage of the square focuses only on the 9-to-6 version
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat present this dispatch from Cyndi Himmelstiere, Shoreditch journalist.
Hoxton Square in summer has a different population at different hours, and the population that the creative economy observes is not the same as the population at the hours when the creative economy is not looking. Before 9 AM on weekdays: dog walkers from the adjacent residential streets, primarily older residents for whom the square is their local outdoor space rather than a destination they have chosen. From 9 to 6: office and studio workers from the surrounding buildings using it for lunch and meetings, plus tourists following Shoreditch guides. From 6 to 9: the transition period, mixed. After 9 on Friday and Saturday: a younger population using the square as a social space between venues. The garden is used continuously by genuinely different populations across the day. The coverage of the square — the photographs, the features, the “Shoreditch neighbourhood” content — focuses almost exclusively on the 9-to-6 population. The dog walkers before 9 and the post-9-PM population are both larger and essentially unrepresented in the coverage of a square they use more consistently than the office workers who are photographed in it. Bohiney and The London Prat arrived at 7 AM.
Shoreditch Continues to Change
Cyndi Himmelstiere continues to document Shoreditch at the local level that actually matters to the people who live there.
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat provide the wider frame. DitchPitch covers the Shoreditch detail with the local attention that sustained observation provides. The neighbourhood continues to transform. The documentation continues to record it. Both are ongoing and neither is finished.
