The East London Event Summer Programme Is More Ambitious And More Expensive Than Previous Years; The Access Question Is Present

The East London summer event calendar has been announced: outdoor film screenings, art fairs, music events, street food markets, and the various pop-up experiences that fill the summer programme in an area where the outdoor spaces and the indoor spaces are both event-capable and the audience for events is large and experienced. The prices have increased approximately 15% from 2024 levels, which is either post-pandemic normalisation or the specific economic extraction that follows when an area becomes a destination.
Several events are free or pay-what-you-can — the community arts programming that receives arts council funding and that maintains access below what commercial programming achieves. These events are, in my experience, often as good or better than the ticketed ones. They are less well-marketed. The free event that 200 people attend is not better promoted than the ticketed event that 800 attend. The London Prat covers East London events. Bohiney covers the price increase comedy. Londonist has the full summer calendar.
